The photograph was taken around in the Vancouver ports area. An important figure in Modernist photography, photojournalist John Vanderpant worked in a variety of styles over his career, perhaps most famously his photo-abstractions based on nature and architecture.

Book Prize in Born in Alkmaar, Netherlands on JanuVanderpant was a photojournalist who immigrated to southern Alberta in with his wife. This thesis examines the photographs of terminal grain elevators produced by John Vanderpant, a successful Vancouver commercial photographer who also produced images that were consciously positioned within a high art discourse.

Vanderpant turned to the grain elevator as subject matter in response to the remarks of an unidentified English critic who, while praising the images in a Author: Grant Arnold.

The explosion of picture magazines, print advertising, and photography studios established photography as the ideal medium to express the changing social landscape of post-war America. The Cultural Work of Photography in Canada is an in-depth study on the use of photographic imagery in Canada from the late nineteenth century to the present. This volume of fourteen essays provides a thought-provoking discussion of the role photography has played in representing Canadian identities.

These two images are, in my judgement, outstanding examples of pictorial photography (or camera work as art). Both were made by Vancouver photographers: Harold Mortimer-Lamb was an amateur; John Vanderpant a professional. But when looking at these two lovely images, such labels become irrelevant.
